For inquiries related to water treatment, the quality of water supplied to area municipalities, and the protection of the water supply system’s source waters:

Public Tours

Public tours of the water treatment plants may be provided, by appointment only, for educational purposes. Tours are typically provided to high school, college and university students, as well as civic public interest groups. A request for a tour of the water treatment plant may be submitted in writing via email or by telephone by contacting us as indicated below. Tours are subject to approval, and the submission of a request for a tour does not guarantee the provision of a tour or a tour on the requested date.

Please note the following conditions for public tours of the water treatment plants:

• Requests for tours must be submitted at least thirty (30) calendar days prior to the requested tour date.
• Tours will be conducted on weekdays (Monday through Friday) 8:30AM – 4:30PM, excluding Statutory Holidays. Tours may be conducted outside these hours, subject to staff availability and approval.
• Children or youth less than fourteen (14) years old (grade 8 or lower) may not participate in the tours.
• All tour participants must wear closed-toe shoes. Sandals, “flip flops” or similar open-toe shoes are not allowed.
• The water treatment plants do not meet accessibility standards under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (i.e., the facilities are not accessible for wheelchair or mobility-impaired individuals) and persons with certain disabilities cannot be accommodated on a tour of the water treatment plant.
• Tours may be cancelled at any time if unsafe conditions develop, or at the discretion of the tour guide, including but not limited to unsafe behaviour of the tour participants and developing emergency conditions.
• All tour participants will be required to sign a waiver.

Career Opportunities

Both the Lake Huron and Elgin Area water treatment and transmission systems are operated under contract with the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA).  OCWA is responsible for providing certified water treatment plant operators and other staff to work at these facilities.  Career opportunities with OCWA are posted on their website

In the event of an emergency that may affect the Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System or Elgin Area Primary Water Supply System, please notify:

Pipeline Locates

Excavation activity could result in serious damage to our water transmission pipelines.  Prior to ground disturbance, contact Ontario One Call to request a locate in the vicinity of your work area.  It is recommended that locates are requested 30 days in advance of a planned excavation.

Video Surveillance Program

The Lake Huron and Elgin Area Primary Water Supply Systems use video surveillance on its properties. The information collected by the use of video surveillance cameras is collected under Lake Huron and Elgin Area Primary Water Supply Systems’ authority pursuant to the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Municipal Act, and subject to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The information collected by the video surveillance cameras is used for the purpose of (i) enhancing the protection, safety, and security of the water supply systems, employees, and the public;  (ii) preventing unauthorized activities at the water treatment plants and infrastructure associated with the water supply systems; and (iii) reducing, deterring and investigating incidents of vandalism or criminal activity.
